Cover Letter

A cover letter is a letter of introduction that accompanies résumés sent to prospective employers. It is a marketing tool used to open a dialogue and initiate action. Your cover letter also serves as a writing sample for the employer to consider.
Content
- Introduce yourself and purpose of letter.
- Emphasize your skills.
- Establish a tie to the work environment through a statement of qualifications and job-relevant personal traits.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the organization by briefly making reference to your company/organization/school district research.
- Indicate reason you would like to work for the employer and why you would be an asset.
- Motivate employer to review your résumé.
- Request an appointment or interview.
- Ask for a reply.
- Show initiative and maintain control by indicating action you will take if response is not received.
Format
The information noted above is generally developed into a brief three-paragraph letter.
- Salutation.
- Purpose of letter (paragraph one - often one or two sentences).
- Focus on your qualifications, highlighting your education, skills, experiences as they relate to the specific job and/or organization. Indicate how the employer can benefit from your skills and experience (paragraph two).
- Request response and let the employer know how you will follow up (paragraph three).
- Closing.
- Indicate enclosures.
Remember…
- Photocopied cover letters are unacceptable.
- Form letters are in poor taste; personalize each letter and target it toward the position for which you are applying.
- Be sure your letters are free of errors. Errors are easy to make.
- Ask others to help you with proofing.
- Use a clear type face, generally no smaller than 12 point.
- Always print on good quality paper identical to that used for your résumé.
- Do not staple your cover letter to your résumé.
