Your First Year Experience at Avila University
Welcome to Avila University! Transitioning from high school to college is a big step in your life and we want to make it easy for you. The New Student Orientation will answer a lot of questions you might have and even the ones you may not know to ask. Freshman Seminar is a class that will teach you how to become more independent. Avila University has also incorporated a common reading for all first year students as part of the First Year Experience program called The Common Reading Program. Student success research is very clear about how this type of program can assist in emphasizing academic importance prior to the start of classes and assist in building community within the first year class.
We offer many services to help you during your time here at Avila including:
- Avila Care Team is there to help people with a crisis or if you have a concern about someone else.
Career Services to help with your resume and job search, - Counseling Services for when you may feel a little home sick or simply need someone to talk to,
- Disability Services,
Health Services and - Learning Services which includes FREE tutoring.

AUGUST
MOVE-IN DAY - Friday, August 19, 2011
When you arrive with all your bags, food and clothes, you will be greeted by Avila employees and students who are ready to help you carry them to your room. That means fewer trips for you and your family.

COMMUNITY PLUNGE - HARVESTERS - Tuesday, August 23, 2011
Contribute your time & effort in a Kansas City community involvement project with your classmates! Lunch provided. All students enrolled in First Year Seminar are required to attend.

AVILA KICK OFF CELEBRATION - Mass of the Holy Spirit & Student Organization Fair
Starts with the Mass of the Holy Spirit, held at the beginning of every academic year to call on God's Spirit for inspiration for the upcoming year. Then you enjoy a FREE picnic while browsing student organizations' booths, learning more about each organization and playing games to win prizes.
OCTOBER
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Every October, the student organization, PEACH, raffles off pumpkins that Avila employees/students have donated to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Let the good times roll as you get pumped up for the big game on Saturday with Eagle Madness Friday Night. Enjoy food, games, prizes, dancing and more! Then join the Alumni Association for tailgating Saturday at lunch. Stick around for the half-time show during the football game to see who is crowned king and queen.
DINNER THEATRE - Homecoming Weekend
Don't miss out on the first theatre production for the school year! It's usually a comedy and students get to watch for FREE!

Students, faculty & staff participate in this celebration by setting up booths with food from different cultures around the world. This is the most talked-about event on campus. Over 300 people usually attend this event.
STEER DINNER & AUCTION
Volunteer to help with the annual steer dinner & auction which raises money for student scholarships. You get a FREE dinner and after the auction is over, you can dance the night away on the dance floor.
