Avila, the JCRB/AJC and Conception Abbey will host an Interfaith Dialogue Community Day, bringing to our community two nationally-known religious leaders who both personally knew and worked with Pope John Paul II. Father Dennis McManus, a consultant to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Interreligious and Ecumenical Affairs Committee in Washington D.C and Rabbi James Rudin, American Jewish Committee’ Senior Interreligious Advisor, will discuss those experiences and a path to strengthen interfaith relationships. The Interfaith Dialogue Community Day is open to the public on March 1, at 3:30 p.m. in the Extreme Screen Theatre.

On March 2, Avila the JCRB/AJC and Conception Abbey will offer an interfaith dialogue institute for clergy and lay pastoral workers. This event will feature Fr. Dennis McManus and Rabbi James Rudin, and allow for more in-depth discussion on ''Partings of the way: What new scholarship teaches us about Christianity & Judaism.'' The Interfaith Dialogue Clergy Day is open to clergy and pastoral ministers of all faith traditions ( RSVP is required. Throughout the exhibit, Avila University and Theatre for Young America will co-produce the play “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.” This play is based on the writings of children who passed through the Terezin concentration camp in World War II. The performances will be held at the City Stage Theatre on the following dates.

With the exception of the $3 ticket to see “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” Avila University and its partners are bringing the inspirational events and exhibit to Union Station at no cost to the public.

EDUCATORS WORKSHOP

Avila University and the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education presented a workshop for middle and high school educators and administrators to compliment the exhibit A Blessing to One Another: Pope John Paul II and the Jewish People. The workshop was conducted by Jeffrey Myers, Ph.D., associate professor of history at Avila University and Jessica Rockhold, education director for the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education. Attendees received background information, educational outcomes, materials and classroom activities that they may tailor to meet their particular classroom needs.
HARRY S. TRUMAN LECTURE SERIES

The exhibit kicked off Feb. 3, with the Harry S. Truman Lecture Series featuring exhibit co-creator Dr. James Buchanan. He presented, “Responding to Globalization: The New Challenges for Interfaith Dialogue in the 21st Century.” Michael J. Devine, Director of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, opened the evening by discussing the importance of President Truman’s recognition of the state of Israel. Most Reverend Robert W. Finn, D.D., Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph blessed the exhibit and the Avila University Singers performed.
HISTORICAL LECTURE WITH FRAN STERNBERG, PH.D.

Fran Sternberg, Ph.D., with the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education will present the lecture, “Interwar Polish Jewry: In Search of a Proper Future.” She will speak about Interwar Polish Jewry, the largest Jewish community in the world, which in a reborn Poland, pressed to reinforce its own national identity and to ensure its own political and economic stability. The lecture, held in Avila University’s Whitfield Center, is open to the public and is free of charge. |
