Loretta McGovern enters her 2nd season as the head coach of Avila’s volleyball program looking to improve from a tough 2013 season.
Before coming to Avila, McGovern served as an assistant coach at Johnson County Community College. In her only season at JCCC, the Cavaliers compiled a record of 28-6, going 7-3 in the East Jayhawk Conference and finishing second in the district tournament.
In addition to her collegiate experience, McGovern served as Head JV Coach at Helias High School in Jefferson City from 2003 to 2006, Freshman Head Coach at Notre Dame De Sion in 2006, and has been a Team KC Volleyball Club coach since 2007.
Growing up just down the street from Avila, McGovern was a former standout at Notre Dame de Sion high school. She was a second team All-Metro selection as a senior, and was also selected to the Kirkwood Volleyball Association all-state team.
McGovern went on to play collegiately at the University of Missouri and reached two national tournaments in her two seasons as a Tiger. McGovern stepped away from volleyball her final two years at UM to focus on her education.
After a five year hiatus from the college game, McGovern served as both a player and assistant coach at Rockhurst University under head coach Tracy Rietzke, one of the winningest coaches all-time in NCAA Volleyball. The Hawks produced winning records in all three years McGovern served on staff, including two 20-win seasons.
McGovern earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri in journalism and advertising and a master’s degree in secondary English education from Rockhurst University.
Christiana McQuin will be entering her first year as an assistant coach at Avila University. She joins Avila after a very successful four year career as a Middle-Hitter at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) where she played under head coach Christi Posey.
McQuin currently plays for Kansas City's professional women's volleyball team, the Heart of America Havoc, members of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL)
In her four years at UMKC, McQuin played in all but two of her 122 career matches, and set school career records for most blocks (418) and block assists (365). In addition, she finished seventh in career aces (99).
On multiple occasions McQuin was selected to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, The Summit League Fall Academic All-League Team, and UMKC Scholar Athlete list. Christiana was also selected to the 2008 Summit League All-Freshman team and was a Summit League Second Team All-Conference selection in 2009.
A native of Wellington, Kansas, McQuin was a three time All-Conference selection while attending Wellington High School earning all-league first and second team honors and setting schools records for most kills (241), blocks (175, and total points (308) in a season as a junior.
In addition, McQuin has coached club volleyball for Team KC Volleyball since 2012, serving as both an assistant and head coach.
McQuin graduated with cum laude honors from UMKC in 2012 with a degree in Business Administration.
