Head Cross Country Coach
Dave Denny enters his fifth season as the head men's and women's cross country, and track and field coach at Avila University.
Denny is a native of Raytown, MO, and a graduate of Raytown South High School. He also competed in cross country and track and field at the University of Central Missouri.
Denny has more than 30 years of cross country and track experience. While coaching at the high school level, he won four state championships and 22 of his runners won state individual. His most recent coaching success was at Shawnee Mission South High School, where his teams won regional titles and placed in the top six in Kansas. Denny has earned five Missouri Coach of the Year honors and was inducted into the Missouri Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006.
In 1990-1992, Denny was the cross country coach at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. During his high school career, he has coached three of the top distance runners in Missouri history including Matt Tegenkamp.
Tegenkamp is now an Olympian, two-time World Championship participant and the American record-holder in the two mile run (8:07.07).
Denny and his wife Sherry reside in Lee’s Summit, MO, with their son Greg and daughter Kara.
