  Women's Soccer Outlook

Looking back at the 2006 season is a pleasant thought for the returning members of the Avila University Women's Soccer team. The Women reached a plateau not seen in some time. A record over .500, finishing the 2006 season at 9-8.

To Coach Paul McNally that's wonderful if you graduated. To the returning players that's just a starting point as preparation for the 2007 season begins.

Getting into the top tier of teams in the strong Heart of America Conference, being successful against a significantly upgraded schedule are the expectations McNally has for this team.

" We have 14 players here who have experienced the level of play needed. We have 8 returnees who saw a significant amount of time in 2006. It's time to get it done!

McNally has taken a bit more of a Darwin approach with this team as they prepare for 2007. The expectations are higher, the demands are far above last season and the new players bring an added level of competition to every practice.

" We have First team All-State players, a Junior College All-American and several high level players joining Avila Soccer this Fall. If a returning player believes they're on the field because they played last year all they need do is look around."

Training sessions have been brisk, competitive and intense. Having a high level of fitness is a must just to survive. Being creative with the ball, making good decisions on and off the field are all part of the plan for 2007.

"If this team stays healthy, stays together, and keeps reaching for a higher level, we might pull off a surprise or two." Commented McNally.

It will be tough. There's Graceland , William Jewell and Benedictine. There's a much improved rest of the HAAC. There's a non-conference schedule with a significantly upgraded level of strength.

But then there's the Avila Women's Soccer team. And there just seems to be something that has McNally expecting more than playing at the .500 level.
