Avila Wins
in Exciting Fashion 2-1
North Newton, KS - The Avila
University Men's Soccer Team scored with four seconds remaining
in the first half and again with a minute to play to defeat Bethel
College on Tuesday night (Sept. 22). Pat Kelly opened the scoring
for Eagles when he found the net just before the halftime whistle.
Bethel tied the match in the 70th minute on a goal by David Counts.
Ryan Wohlgehmuth put the deciding goal away in the 89th minute when
he followed up a shot by Paul Hillbrand that was mishandled by the
keeper. It was Wohlgemuth's first career goal and a great way to
start his goal scoring career at Avila.
The Eagles (3-5) dominated
most of the match by outshooting the Threshers 15-7 and leading
the corner kick battle 6-1.
Coach Clements was happy
that the kids continued to fight for 90 minutes,"Tonight was
a prime example of why you continue to play for all 90 minutes.
With a goal with 4 seconds to go and then another with just over
a minute to play shows how important it is too stay focused for
the whole game. I thought we controlled play tonight but once again
were plagued by lack of scoring. Our defense played a good game
apart from one let down and they made us pay, besides that, it was
a good effort from the backs."
Roberto Camacho, Pat Kelly,
and Ben Dlugolecki led the Eagles with three shots a piece.
Ray Dlugolecki played 90
minutes in the net recording 3 saves.
The Eagles return home this
Saturday (Sept. 26th) when they open conference play against Missouri
Valley College. The match is set to start at 3 PM on campus at Avila
Field.
