The
Avila University Glitter Girls dance team is looking forward to
a fun 2009-2010 season. Coach and program founder Cindy Freeman
is very excited to begin a new year with such a talented group of
dancers. This year marks the return of an Avila Glitter Girls
alumni in a new role. Kristin Cira (2002-2006) returns to
Avila as an assistant dance coach this season. The end of this year
will mark the graduation of 4 year team members Melanie Priddy,
Elizabeth Roberts, Jennifer Sosna, Juliet Valle and Molly Williams.
The
Glitter Girls have quickly developed into one of the premier college
dance programs in the United States . Not only do the Glitter
Girls perform at Avila University campus events and intercollegiate
football and basketball contests, they are also competitive on a
national level.
In each
of the eight years of existence, the Glitter Girls have qualified
to compete at the Universal Cheer and Dance Association s National
Championships held in January at the Walt Disney World Resort in
Orlando, Florida. Not only have the Avila dancers competed
nationally, they have found success in each of the past 9 seasons
competing against programs form a wide variety of colleges and universities
from around the country. In 2003 and 2008, they captured the
Heart of America Conference Spirit Squad Championship. During
the 2005 Collegiate National Championships in Orlando , Florida
the team brought home a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE HIP-HOP
DIVISION. As a result of this the team was seen on both ESPN
and ESPN 2 on numerous occasions. During the 2009-2010 season
the team finished 6th in the open jazz division and brought home
bronze medals with a 3rd place finish in the open hip-hop division.
The Glitter Girls feature
many studio trained dancers with both competitive and professional
experience. The dance program's comprehensive instruction includes
strenuous physical conditioning and intensive flexibility and technique
training with the goal of challenging even the most experienced
and talented dancers to continually improve and refine their skills.
