Easter Break! |
|
| |
April 13, 2009 |

| |
This week was a slow one.
Classes consisted of wrapping up and coming to a good stopping
point for a long weekend. You could definitely see the students
on campus getting ready for a long weekend as well. The seniors
were a little sad knowing this is their last break before they
graduate in a a little more than a month. Since I am a freshman,
I had no reserevations for the break. More... |

Back to School Again... |

Back
to classes! I went home last week for spring break to hang out
with the family for a little bit. All my friends from high school
were in town so we hung out, played basketball and took advantage
of the nice weather just about every day.
I
came back to campus over the weekend and had fun reuniting with
my college friends. We were all instantly reminded at six-thirty
on Monday morning that spring break was over when we had to
go to weights. One exciting thing that happened was full pads
practices outside started back up for spring football. It was
fun to get back into the swing of things and hit a little bit.

Spring Break is Near! |

There
was certain energy on campus this past week… Everyone was ready
for a break. Although we were getting ready to get out for the
break, there were still some exciting activities on campus.
One
thing that happened was an activity put on by one of the Avila
students. He took the initiative to teach people about the dangers
of alcohol. He set up a putting green in the Marian Lounge and
let people try to sink a putt while wearing drunk goggles. It
was a good way to show students how impaired you become when
drinking and that you should NEVER drink and drive. It was hard
to stand up wearing those goggles I can't imagine driving with
them on. More... |

Happy Mardi Gras! |

This
week was like any other week on campus as far as school goes.
Classes went on as scheduled, and we still had weight lifting
every morning Monday through Friday. There were, however, some
exciting occurances!
There
was yet another girls/boys basketball double header. The boys
game was intense! It was back and forth the whole game, but
the boys ended up losing. The girls beat Benedictine so now
they are first in the conference and have a real shot at making
it farther. They play Wednesday and I am sure I will see many
of the Avila students there. If you are planning on being an
Eagle someday, bring your friends and your family, the team
can use all the cheering they can get! More... |

Senior prom all over again! |

The women's basketball team
played Park on Tuesday. It was a pretty good game, and as usual
the girls won… by a lot. They didn't get much time off either
because there was a girls/boys doubleheader on Thursday against
Baker. The girls won again by but the boys game was a different
story. It was neck and neck the whole game but Avila finally pulled
away in the end and got the victory. More... |

It
felt good to be back in school, and everyone was glad to see
each other. The tensions were high as the Superbowl was drawing
near. You could see a definite separation in Cardinals fans
and Steelers fans. People were walking around campus with their
“Terrible Towels” or decked out in all red. Although everyone
had their team of choice we still participated in activities
together.
The
Marian Lounge had free wings served during the game. Steelers
and Cardinals alike got the opportunity to act like true football
fans and chow down on some good ol' fashioned buffalo wings.
I really wish I would have brought along my camera to take photos.
On second thought, the game was so exciting, I probably wouldn't
have remembered to take pictures anyway. More... |

What a break! |

I
must admit I was a little sad to be leaving campus back in December,
but I was ready for a nice break from classes. Over the break
my cousins from St. Louis came to town and we spent a lot of
time together. We went to my grandma's house and all of my extended
family came to celebrate Christmas. It was crazy! There were
about fifty people playing games and having a good time. It
was overwhelming to have so many people around, but I enjoyed
every minute of spending time with my family. More... |

Temperatures falling...tensions rising! |

Last week on campus was hectic
to say the least! Students are all trying to get focused on their
classes so they can get ready for finals. The school has done
a lot to help with the pressure by giving us little stress relieving
activities. For example, they have had a drawing outside the cafeteria
where everyone's a winner of at least candy, but you could possibly
win gift cards and many other prizes. There were also free massages
in the Marian Center Lounge to help students work out some of
the pre-test tension. The faculty & staff even serve a late-night
breakfast in the dining hall the night before finals start.
With these and other activities offered to students, it was a
pretty good week on campus. It even snowed! More... |

Finals are nearing...I'm ready for some free
stuff! |

This
week was just another week on campus. There wasn't too much
going on that was unusual. In most of our classes, we have slowed
down on learning new material and started talking about our
finals. I think I speak for most of students here when I say
that I'm getting nervous for them. The library is also getting
more frequent visitors since people are starting to study more
for their tests. However, some people go there to study, but
end up socializing more than anything.
Avila's
Alumni Association does this thing called First Friday Freebies.
They give away an item to all students on the first Friday of
each month. Sometimes it's a t-shirt, other times cool highlighter/pen
combos, and other cool stuff. Christmas is approaching and we
got the perfect first Friday freebie this month! It was a purple
coffee cup with a lid on it. I have a feeling, there's going
to be a lot of mom's opening Avila University coffee cups for
Christmas. More...

Winter is in the air... |

This
week has been a great week on campus. It was the first week
since we've been here that we didn't have football practice.
It was nice to actually get out of your classes for the day
and have the rest of your day off. Apparently, the only thing
any of the football players do is play basketball because we've
played almost every day since the season ended. And of course...I
dominate on the court. (yeah right)
Winter
is starting to creep in now and it is obvious if you look around
on campus. There are a lot more students taking advantage of
the underground tunnels and everyone who is outside is walking
very quickly. The campus looks picturesque with all the leaves
falling off and blowing around on the ground. It is so pretty.

So,
Sunday we had tons of students from high schools come visit
campus. They were attending this event called View AU. I got
to hang out with them when we went ice skating at Crown Center.
It was a blast...even though we froze half to death.
After
we ice skated, we came back to Avila and hung out in the res
halls with other current students and showed the visitors what
a typical Sunday night is like here on campus. They also got
to go to class the next day and then attend an awesome Psychology
in Action seminar that was put on by our Psych dept. It was
very interesting and it got me out of class which was nice!

Ah, to be an Eagle... |

Hello
everyone. Welcome to my Student Journal page. I'm Chuck and
I'm a freshman here at Avila. I play football (well...I'm red-shirting
this season) and I'm majoring in Psychology. I can't believe
the
first semester is almost half way over and I must say it has
flown by. I remember when I got here I was a little nervous
for what it would be like to be on my own, especially living
with people I'd never met before. I don't know what I was worried
about. The transition ended up being pretty easy and the upper
classmen treated me like I had been there as long as they had
right from the start.
The
first thing I got involved in on campus was football. We started
the season off with a lot of conditioning including a three
hundred yard shuttle run to try to get people in shape. It was
pretty tough but it was fun at the same time. It was an interesting
transition to go from being a senior to a freshman again on
the field. For a while it was eat, sleep, and dream football.
