  Kansas City, MO
January 8, 2008

The Annual PeaceWorks Peace Studies Scholarship was established to award students studying peace and justice.  PeaceWorks is an organization that advocates for alternatives to military solutions to problems.

The 2007-2008 scholarship went to two Avila students who exemplified the PeaceWorks mission.

Social work major Dara Pacheco and psychology major Gina Buice each received the $1,000 scholarship.

Dara Pacheco exhibited her commitment toward social justice through her work in Central America clean-up efforts, distribution of supplies to orphanages in Romania, support of the impoverished community of Croc, Mexico, work as a Big Sister in Kansas City, and a long extensive list of other activities.  She is also a full-time student.

Gina Buice peace activities include financial administration of the Peace & Justice Committee of St. James Parish, Board Membership with the Troost Alliance, event planning with the Respect Life and Crisis Pregnancy Center in Grandview, and organization of the Eyes Wide Open and Cost of War exhibits. She also volunteers with Holy Family Catholic Worker House, St. James Community Kitchen and Project Uplift.
