Members of the Talon Media Network (TMN) brought home eight awards from the Missouri Collegiate Media Association (MCMA) 2013 Annual Conference, held April 21 in Joplin, Mo.
The Talon’s eight awards were for work in writing, photography, advertising, illustration, and publication design. The Avila students compete in Division 3 of the MCMA competition.
TMN won first place, second place and received honorable mention for its advertising design; third-place awards for its sports columns and sports photography, third place and honorable mentions for its story illustrations and second place for its Web page coverage and design.
According to J. Anthony Snorgrass, Ph.D., professor of advertising, branding and strategic media and the Talon’s faculty advisor, the significance of this year’s awards is that it represents the full spectrum of the team’s work, particularly in the diversity of the categories in which the students won. The Talon’s sports coverage especially stood out.
“This year’s awards are extra special because the team focused its submissions to showcase its sports communication media to coincide with the inaugural year for the Sports Communication Program in the School of Visual & Communication Arts,” Snorgrass said. “Special accolades go to Elizabeth Carroll, this year’s editor in chief, and the entire team for the many extra hours they have devoted to assure the Talon and Avila University remain a model of progressiveness and innovation in media.
“It is always exciting to have other professionals in the journalism world show favor for your students’ work and to have a measure of how their efforts stack up against other schools in the state, some of which have full-blown journalism programs."
Carroll shared, “I am so excited to have been the editor in chief of the Talon Magazine this year. We have a great set of writers who work hard on every story. We work as a team, and that is what has made us successful.”
Carroll will be graduating this year, and Aimee Adams, who was this year’s copy editor, will assume the Talon editor-in-chief position. Adams shares that, “The past accomplishments for the Talon will truly serve as inspiration to continue this legacy of success as I assume this important leadership role.”
