Recent graduate receives scholar award from PeaceWorks

Anne Kwon

Recent Avila graduate Anne Kwon was honored with the Peace Studies Scholar Award, given annually by PeaceWorks Kansas City, an organization which since 1982 has been the leading voice in the area against the nuclear arms race. The Peace Studies Scholar Award bestows a prize worth $1,500 annually to a student studying peace and social justice at Avila University.

Kwon received her bachelor’s in social work from Avila in May.

“I was really honored to win the Peace Scholar Award this year,” Kwon said. “This had been something I wanted to apply for back when I took a Peace Studies course in spring 2012, but had never had the chance to. While being in that course, I gained a basic knowledge of peacemaking and the term ‘peace.’ I was eager to learn more in this area through my own experiences with other local peacemakers, and now I will have the chance to.”

To be eligible for the award, students must have completed or be enrolled in a peace studies or social problems/social change or social justice course and be willing to serve a year on the board of PeaceWorks. A committee consisting of PeaceWorks representatives and Avila faculty selected Kwon after an evaluation of student applications.

“By being part of the board at PeaceWorks, I hope to use this knowledge while participating in their activities and learn more on peacemaking,” said Kwon, who recently accepted a position as a social work case manager at KVC Health Systems, Inc. “I also wish to further assist the members of PeaceWorks and other peacemakers out there on educating other individuals on how to make this world a better and peaceful place to live in without the use of violence. Not only do I look forward to gaining from the members of PeaceWorks, but I hope to bring a newer and fresher perspective on how to involve educating others in this area.”
