Avila University’s student news organization, the Talon Media Network, took home six awards at the Missouri College Media Association Conference.
Adam Stinson, Talon Layout Editor and Advertising Manager, represented Avila at the conference and awards banquet held in St. Louis. Among the awards, the Talon took second and third place in the overall advertising category and won the “Best Overall News Publication” for its division.
“This award represents an important recognition of the students who worked so diligently as a team to showcase student views in an engaging manner,” said J. Anthony Snorgrass, Talon advisor.
The Talon was selected a by a panel of judges representing media professionals from across the state as the “Best Overall” for Division 3 schools which includes Park University, William Jewel, Southwest Baptist, Drury University, Culver-Stockton, Missouri Valley, Stephens College, Fontbonne University and Westminster University.
“The Talon has been around since 1992 and this is the first time Avila has received first place in the overall category in its 17-year existence,” said Steve Iliff, Dean of the School of Professional Studies and Talon advisor between 1995 and 2004.
Dotty Hamilton, Dean of the School of Visual and Communication Arts, who served as the Talon advisor as it transitioned from its predecessor, the Examiner, to the Talon in 1993, said, “I am both excited and delighted as Avila students are honored for their accomplishments, especially by receiving such a prestigious state-wide recognition.”
The Talon staff also won individual awards. Stinson won second place in advertising. Jon Dunn, Talon Layout Editor, won third place in advertising, and Nicole Drew, Talon staff writer, took honorable mention in the arts and entertainment category.
“I am delighted with both the number and the categories in which the Talon won,” said Kayle Walker, Editor in Chief for the Talon. “I am most impressed with the three overall awards because they show what can be done when a team is really focused and works well together.”
Avila University is a private, co-educational, values-based liberal arts institution founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, offering undergraduate, graduate, and adult degree programs. Avila University is located at 119th and Wornall Rd in southwest suburban Kansas City, Mo.
