Avila students help build classroom libraries
  Kansas City, MO
May 14, 2009

Avila University students, faculty, staff and friends supported Our Lady of the Angels by hosting an annual book drive.

The officers of Kappa Delta Pi delivered more than 2,250 books to Our Lady of the Angels school. The books were donated through Kappa Delta Pi’s annual book drive. Called Literacy Alive, the book drive is sponsored by the Kappa Delta Pi international office and is celebrated by all Kappa Delta Pi chapters.

“The partnership with Our Lady of the Angels school was developed through Avila’s President, Ron Slepitza,” said faculty advisor and coordinator of teacher certification testing Rochelle Kroshus. “He has requested that the Avila community work with this school, using our skills and resources.”

After delivering the books, the officers spent time reading with the students. The faculty and staff at Our Lady of the Angels plan to build classroom libraries with a large selection of books from the Kappa Delta Pi donation.

Kappa Delta Pi is an international honor society in education whose community of educators focuses on excellence at all stages of their education careers. Membership is open to those with academic excellence and dedication to the teaching profession.
“These students must be working on a major or minor in the field of education, have at least a 3.0 GPA and be in the process of taking 12 credit hours in education courses,” said Kroshus. “Of course, we do not want to omit students who do not yet meet these requirements, so they can join the Avila Education Association.”

The AEA is open to all Avila students with an interest in education. As members of AEA, they can participate in community service, fundraising and professional development activities while working towards meeting the criteria for Kappa Delta Pi membership.
