Biochemistry (BC)
The candidate for the Bachelor of Science degree in
Biochemistry must complete all the general degree
requirements as stated earlier in this catalog.
Biochemistry Outcomes:
Upon graduation, a student majoring in biochem-
istry should be able to demonstrate:
1. Fundamental knowledge in biochemical, ana-
lytical, organic and physical chemistry and its
application, integration and appreciation
(External Examination);
2. Effective scientific communication (CH 342
and 461);
3. Laboratory competence (CH 137 and 221);
4. Problem solving and interpretive skills
(CH 497 and 499).
Assessment:
The outcomes for the Biochemistry major are
assessed through a combination of an external
examination, laboratory results, formal laboratory
reports, term papers, oral reports, mentor evalua-
tions, and a rubric measuring laboratory compe-
tence. Students may choose the external examina-
tion that they take from: the Graduate Record
Examination in Chemistry, and American Chemical
Society Standardized Examination, MCAT, or DAT.
The following courses in the Biochemistry Major
must be completed with a grade of C or better:
CH 131, 137, 216, 217, 221, 342, 343, 344, 345,
451, 461, 497 and 499; BI 111, 112, 250, and 318;
CS 110; MA 241; PH 231 and 232.
Computer competency will be demonstrated by
successful completion of CS 110.
Students majoring in Biochemistry are also required
to demonstrate competency through a national
examination approved by the chemistry faculty.
No minor is offered in Biochemistry.
Biology (BI)
Biology, the science of life, is one of the most fas-
cinating and rewarding disciplines. Students suc-
cessfully completing the Avila University Biology
major can pursue a variety of career options,
including work in the health professions; forensic
sciences; forestry; agriculture; fisheries; oceanog-
raphy; conservation; environmental research and
management; medical and scientific publishing;
business careers in health administration, instru-
mentation, and pharmaceuticals; secondary educa-
tion; or pursue special research interests as a post-
graduate biologist.
The candidate for the Bachelor of Science degree in
Biology must complete all general degree require-
ments as stated earlier in this catalog. Students
must complete all Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and
Mathematics courses applicable to degree require-
ments with a minimum grade of C.
Biology Program Outcomes
1. Biology majors will acquire a foundation of sci-
entific knowledge that includes the historical
development of biological thought, cell theory,
biogenesis, homeostasis, gene theory, and ecol-
