Sharpe Resigns as Athletic Director

at Avila University

Mike Sharpe, Athletic Director at Avila University since 2001, has resigned effective August 29, 2008. Sharpe will become the Assistant Commissioner of the Great West Conference, based in Chicago, Ill., and consists of several Division I schools throughout the country. He will primarily be charged with the responsibility of conference compliance to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) national office.
Mike has enjoyed 17 years in college athletics with positions at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Johnson County Community College , Brown-Mackie College , and Pratt Community College . During his seven years at Avila , Mike has overseen numerous improvements to Avila 's athletics which included the celebration of the first year of intercollegiate participation for the Avila football program, the expansion of competitive dance and cheer, the formation of a new women's golf team, and the $2.5 million expansion of the Mabee Fieldhouse. Athletic retention is at an all time high of seventy-nine percent and student athletes currently share an average grade point average of 2.97. Sharpe was named the Heart of America Conference's Athletic Director of the Year for 2002-2003, and for 2004-2005. Sharpe was also named the NAIA Region V Athletic Director of the Year 2005-2006. He resides in Overland Park, Kan, with his wife Brenda, and two children William and Theresia.
A search will be conducted for a new athletic director.
