For
the second consecutive year, fundraising efforts within the department
allowed for a significant purchase to enhance the athletic facilities
at Avila . An outdoor sound system was purchased for the three playing
areas on the Zarda Athletic Complex to allow for a public address
system and music entertainment for the sports of Men's Soccer, Women's
Soccer, Baseball, and Softball. The volleyball team under the direction
of first year head coach Amy Carlson suffering through a difficult
vehicle accident earlier in the season, still managed to qualify
for the Heart of America Athletic Conference playoffs for the second
consecutive year losing to William Jewell in the first round. Coach
Carlson, who was selected HAAC Coach of the year, resigned her position
at season's end and was replaced by Jan Madlock. The Athletic Hall
of Fame inducts former Men's Soccer standout Craig Kasten, Avila
's only back-to-back first team All-American in school history.
Under the direction of first year head coach Larry Williams, the
Women's basketball team qualifies 6 th overall and loses at Missouri
Valley College in round one of the playoffs. The Men's basketball
team also qualifies for post season play, traveling to MidAmerica
Nazarene and losing in round one. The spring season sees the Avila
softball team finish the year with an overall record of 30-15 and
qualifying for the HAAC post season tournament in Springfield ,
MO where their season came to a finish. The baseball team finished
with an overall record of 38-17, third in the HAAC and runner-up
in the Region V tournament. Senior outfielder Willie Keene was named
the Region player of the year and was selected as a first team NAIA
All-American. The women's golf team in only their fourth year of
existence made their strongest showing ever at the HAAC/Region V
tournament finishing 3 rd in the conference and 4 th in the region.
Head coach Jerry Krause was selected HAAC coach of the year for
his team's effort.
