October 24, 2009

The Avila University Eagle football team continued their impressive season with a 20-15 win over HAAC rival William Jewel in Liberty, Missouri.

The Eagle offense gained 319 total yards. On the ground, Damien Collins (SR, Kansas City, MO) was the leading rusher with 67 yards with a touchdown, and Brian Witt (SR, Jupiter, FL) adding a touchdown in the 3 rd quarter. In the air, Austin Cole (JR, Grass Lake, MI) passed for 221 yards on 22 completions with Witt and David Sloan (SR, Marshfield, MO) both catching 6 passes for 78 and 71 yards respectively. Witt (5.3) and Sloan (4.9) are currently 2 nd and 3 rd in the HAAC in receptions per game. Andrew Korth (JR, Grandview, MO) added 2 field goals in the first half.

Avila's defense, for the second time in 2 games, held the opponents from scoring and preserving the win in the final two minutes. The Cardinal offense was first and 10 from the Eagle 20 yard line only down by 5 with only 90 seconds left in the game. Avila stopped a running play, caused an incomplete pass, sacked the Cardinal quarterback on 3 rd down, and secured the win on a turnover on downs as the pass defense forced the Cardinals to come up short, and preserve the first ever victory over the Cardinals.

On the day Avila's defense was very tough forcing 5 Cardinal turnovers, 4 interceptions and 1 fumble. Leading the way was Cody Langston (JR, Carl Junction, MO), who led the team in tackles (8), an interception, a fumble and a sack. Tyler Cardwell (SO, Blue Springs, MO), Bryan Bosley (SR, Kansas City, MO), and Andre Edwards (SR, Springfield, MO) each had an interception.

There is a lot to be excited for this year for Coach Bruce Young and the Eagles. Coach Young is excited and says “There are many good things happening and the recruiting is heating up this time of the year, with high school players on campus daily.”

The Eagles, winners of 3 of the last 5 games, are currently 4-4 in the season and are in 6 th place in the HAAC (Avila was pre-season ranked 10 th in the HAAC). They host Evangel University this Saturday October, 31 st at Dasta Stadium in Kansas City at 1:00 PM.
