Omaha, NE - Tranquility Park - Bellevue University, rated 25th in NAIA, hoped to turn around their loss last week but was unsuccessful as visiting Avila University upset the Bruins Thursday night at Tranquility Park, 0-2. The Bruins, after recording nine straight shutouts and not losing a match in 10 tries, have lost two straight being shutout in both instances.
Avila University scored first with a Katie Newman unassisted shot past the Bruin keeper to the lower side of the goal in the 55th minute. Two minutes later (57:38), the Eagles scored on an Ashley Reagan free kick that went past the Bruin wall into the left side of the goal.
Bellevue University, 12-3-1 overall, had their opportunities at Rebecca Lauver (Omaha, Neb.) had a couple shots on goal, one deflected hitting the side post in the first half. The Bruins out-shot the Eagle 15-10 getting four shots from freshman Priscilla Flores (North Platte, Neb.) to lead the Bellevue attack getting three shots each from Amber Barry and Marisol Ramos. Jennifer Fauble (Council Bluffs, Iowa) allowed two goals getting three saves in 90 minutes.
Katie Newman led Avila with three shots, and a goal to improve to 5-9 overall. Avila held a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks over Bellevue and committed only 8 fouls to 12 of the host Bruins. Maddie Covalt (Lincoln, Neb.), Eagle keeper, picked up the shutout victory recording 5 saves in 90 minutes.
