Orrick standout signs with Avila

Brittany Townsend, a senior at Orrick High School in Orrick , Missouri signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Avila University yesterday at her high school.

Playing for coach Mitch Comstock, she averaged 13.3 points per game in leading her team to the Missouri Class 2, District 14 Championship game her senior year. Brittany – a 1,000+ point scorer in high school – was named to the KMZU Dream Team three times in her career and was selected to play in the Lions Club All-Star Game. She has alsobeen named All-District by the Kansas City Star twice, AP All-District twice, and All-I-70 Conference after each of her four seasons in high school.

“ Brittany is going to be a tremendous asset to both Avila University and the Women's

Basketball program. Orrick has a fine basketball tradition and has certainly developed an outstanding skill set during her high school career and we are excited about what she brings to our program. She is a tall guard who handles the ball well and can attack

defenses on the dribble or from a distance with her outstanding shooting range. She is an intelligent player who understands the flow of a game. She wears her heart on her sleeve and plays the game with tremendous passion and effort. Brittany loves the game of basketball and competes at a very high level. She is a wonderful athlete and will help us to continue to speed the game up and exert pressure on our opponents at both ends of the floor. We continue to add young ladies of high character to our program, and Brittany is just that. We are very excited to welcome her into the AU Women's Basketball family.”

Brittany is the daughter of Tom and Deanne Townsend of Orrick , Missouri . Her older

sister also plays basketball at Avila and was recently named a 3 rd Team NAIA All-

American. Also an All-District volleyball player, Brittany has been involved with FCA,

FBLA, FFA, the Yearbook & Newspaper staff, and Student Council. She will be

majoring in Elementary Education at Avila .

Avila University competes on the NAIA, Division II level within the prestigious Heart of

America Athletic Conference. Avila is a private, co-educational, values-based liberal arts institution founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1917 and is located at 119th and Wornall Road in southwest suburban Kansas City , Missouri .
